The popularity of Gaucho grilling has surged in America in recent years - and for good reason!

Argentinian style grills utilize centuries old technology to cook food.  The modern Gaucho grill provides unbeatable smokey flavor and all of the features you need to perfectly manage your cook.

How Do Gaucho Grills Work?

There are two key features that define the Argentinian style grill.

First is the adjustable height cooking grate.  The mechanism which adjusts the height of the grate varies based on the make and model of your grill, but the idea is the same.  Adjust the height of your food in real time to switch from a sear to a low and slow cook to a keep-warm with ease.

The second key feature is a firebox and flat, refractory surface where you create hot coals and distribute them underneath your cooking grate.

Which Tools Do You Need?

You will most definitely need a poker and a shovel to help you operate your grill.  The poker is the tool you'll use to move and arrange your hot coals underneath your cooking grate.

The shovel can be helpful for moving coals too, but it's mostly there to help remove ash and aid in the cleanup process.

Built-In vs Freestanding Gaucho Grills

While Gaucho grills are more commonly found as stand alone grills, there are some fantastic built-in options available that integrate into a custom outdoor kitchen.

If you choose to opt for a built-in, just be sure that you have plenty of clearance space for your lifting mechanism so you can operate the grill comfortably.

How Do You Use A Gaucho Grill?

While there is a small learning curve, using a gaucho grill is quite easy once you get the hang of it.

All you do is light your wood in the firebox and let it burn.  After a while, hot coals will form and drop below to a flat surface where you can move the coals underneath your cooking surface.

From there, you simply arrange your coals in an optimal pattern so that you can cook your food as desired!

Remember to utilize your adjustable height grate to get that perfect sear on your food.

What Types Of Argentinian Grills Are There?

At Elite Patio Direct we carry two brands of Argentinian grill, Ñuke BBQ and Tagwood BBQ.

Both have excellent reputations.  Ñuke specializes in freestanding grills that are highly functional.  Tagwood has a more extensive line of grills that include freestanding, built-in, and bona fide Santa Maria style grills.
