Important Things To Know About Built-In Grills

Cutout Dimensions vs Overall Dimensions

When researching various built-in grills, you might notice two types of measurements listed under the specifications section of each product - overall dimensions and cutout dimensions.

Overall dimensions refer to the dimensions of the actual appliance itself.  In other words, the dimensions of the product after it is unpacked, pre-installation.

Cutout dimensions refer to the size of the opening you should cut into your cabinet to perfectly fit the grill.

The overall dimensions are important to know, but the cutout dimensions are probably more impactful for your project.  So make sure you know how much of a cutout you'll need to take in your counter to place your grill!

Hood Clearance

On a similar note, it's worth paying attention to the hood clearance required behind your grill, especially if you plan to install your appliance in close proximity to a back surface.

Most built-in grills require about 4-6" of rear clearance to open the hood, while others may only require a couple of inches.  Be sure to double check that your grill will have proper clearance in the back!

Fuel Types

There are multiple fuel types available for a built-in grill, and all have their pros and cons.

The most popular fuel types are natural gas and propane, which are cheap fuel sources and very convenient to use.

Charcoal built-in grills provide more robust smokey flavor for your food, but they require for you to build and manage a fire each time you cook.

Infrared grills are a subset of natural gas and propane grills, and utilize infrared heating technology to cook your food.  These grills tend to be more expensive, precise, and offer consistent performance in windy or cold climates.

Things To Consider When Choosing A Built-In Grill

When it comes to choosing the perfect grill for your outdoor kitchen, there are a few considerations to take in while deciding.

Size

It may sound obvious, but it's important to think about how much grill you need.  36-inch grills are probably the most popular size, and they're great for cooking for parties of 4-8.

You can go up from there if you need more room or simply prefer to have more area to work with when you cook.

On the other end, built-in grills are offered in sizes as small as 25 inches - which can be a great option if you're tight on space or don't plan to cook for more than 4-6 at a time.

Warranty

Warranty coverage is a key consideration for built-in grills.  Since there are multiple components that are crucial to the operation of a grill, the wider the scope of your manufacturer warranty coverage, the better.

Many of the brands we carry offer a limited lifetime warranty - which provides lifetime coverage for certain components of your grill.  Be sure to check the details and do research on the warranty coverage of the grill you wish to purchase so you know what you're covered on.

Price Point

Generally speaking, entry level built-in grills start around $1,400.  On the other end of the spectrum, a large built-in grill from a luxury brand can cost upwards of $15,000.

There are options on both ends of the spectrum and everywhere in between.  Price is often reflective of features, construction material, design elements, and whether or not the grill was made in the USA or not.

Materials Used For Housing, Burners, & Grates

Stainless steel is almost exclusively the material of choice for built-in grills, but it's possible to find other materials used such as ceramics or cast aluminum.

Burners come in many types, and there are pros and cons of each, so consider which burner type is best for your outdoor kitchen.

Cooking grids are typically made of stainless steel, cast iron, or porcelain enamel.

Outdoor Kitchen Integration

Not all outdoor kitchen brands offer the same selection of outdoor kitchen products to compliment your grill.

Most brands offer at least some access doors or storage drawers to help create a cohesive look.  Luxury brands often have extensive offerings of complimentary products to truly customize your outdoor kitchen.

Are built-in grills hard to clean?

Most of the time, manufacturers create features to help make the clean up process as pain free as possible.  Often times this takes the form of a removable grease tray or potentially self-cleaning functionality.

Routine cleaning isn't particularly difficult for built-in grills.  After each cook, it's a good idea to scrub down your cooking grates while they're still warm to remove food particles.

How far should a built-in grill be from the house?

In general, it's a good idea to have at least 3-6 feet of clearance from the back of a grill to your house.

With that being said, it's possible to have a grill installed closer to a wall provided there is proper ventilation.  If you are unsure, consult a contractor or the manufacturer for further guidance.

How do you insulate a built-in grill?

The easiest way to insulate a built-in grill by far is to use an insulated jacket liner.  These products are designed specifically by manufacturers to fit their grills, and allow for you to safely install your grill into a combustible surface.

How much do built-in grills cost?

The price of built-in grills can vary greatly depending on the size of the grill and the manufacturer.  Most built-in grills cost between $1,400 to $12,000.

How hot do built-in grills get? 

Most built-in grills can reach at least 750ºF.  Many higher quality grills and infrared grills can get close to 1,000ºF in temperature.
